Volvo EX90 Reviews 2024

Volvo is furthering its shift towards an entirely electric range by unveiling the EX90, a new top-of-the-line SUV. Set to hit the market in 2024 as a 2024 model, it will be positioned higher than the XC90, which runs on gasoline. Drawing inspiration from the Concept Recharge show car, the EX90 boasts a more streamlined appearance compared to the XC90 while still retaining Volvo’s signature design elements like the distinctive “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights and vertically aligned taillights.

The EX90 is expected to come with a standard 496-hp electric powertrain, which, based on the performance of the smaller C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge SUVs, should offer ample power for quick acceleration. With a large battery pack, the EX90 is estimated to have a driving range of around 300 miles per charge and can be recharged using a DC fast-charging connection. Volvo has also mentioned that the EX90 will feature their next-generation driver-assistance technology, including a new driver-monitoring system that can intervene to assist the driver in case of distress or distraction.

Features

The EX90 takes inspiration from the Concept Recharge, which was unveiled last year and represents a gradual progression from the current XC90 SUV. The EX90 maintains the recognizable Volvo design elements, such as the Thor’s hammer headlights and the covered grille that are also featured on the XC40 Recharge.

The profile of the car showcases flush door handles and 22-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with a sharp style. While there are some creases on the sides, what resembles the XC90 is the spacious glasshouse. Moving to the back, it boasts a distinctive split tail lamp design with a C-shaped LED-unit below and a pixelated pattern for the unit above. In terms of size, the EX90 is slightly longer than the XC90 at 5,037mm. It is also wider but slightly shorter in height compared to the XC90.

Performance

All EX90 models will be equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. However, there are two different variants available: the entry-level Twin Motor model, which generates 402 horsepower, and the Twin Motor Performance variant, which produces 496 horsepower. The propulsion system is new and is expected to be shared with the recently introduced Polestar 3. This system can also be obtained in a higher-output version with 517 horsepower. Despite potentially having a higher curb weight compared to its gasoline-powered counterpart, the XC90, the EX90 is still expected to offer quick acceleration. Volvo claims that the Twin Motor model should be able to reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while the Twin Motor Performance variant should achieve this in just 4.7 seconds.

Charging & Battery Life

The Volvo EX90 features a 111-kWh battery pack that is expected to provide approximately 300 miles of range per charge. Standard DC fast charging enables the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes. Additionally, the EV architecture of the EX90 allows for bi-directional charging, allowing it to power household appliances during a power outage or charge another Volvo EV when necessary.

Fuel Economy

The fuel economy estimates for the EX90 have not been released by the EPA at this time. However, we anticipate that it will be on par with other luxury electric SUVs like the BMW iX and the Rivian R1S in terms of competitiveness. As soon as an opportunity arises, we will subject the EX90 to our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route and provide an update on its performance in this article.

Torque & Powertrain

Initially, the EX90 will be equipped with a powertrain that has twin motors and all-wheel drive. These Twin Motor models will have two levels of output: 408hp and 770Nm of torque for regular models, and 517hp and 910Nm of torque for Performance models. Both versions will have a maximum speed of 180kph. It is expected that lower-powered single-motor versions will be released at a later date.

To power the vehicle, it will rely on a 111kWh battery, which provides a range of 600km according to the WLTP cycle. The EV SUV also supports fast charging, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80 percent in less than half an hour. One notable feature of the EX90 is its support for ‘Plug and Charge’. This feature enables automatic charging initiation and payment processing when the vehicle is connected to a compatible charger. In addition, the EX90 will offer bi-directional charging capabilities.
