Toyota has launched its 7-seater MPV Rumion in South Africa. The new vehicle looks similar to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and has been delivered under a coordinated effort by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki.

Toyota has bid farewell to the Rumion and entered the proper MPV segment. The identity designed Ertiga-based MPV is priced starting at Rs 10.29 lakh, ex-showroom. The starting price for reservation with Toyota is Rs 11,000, and deliveries will begin from September 8. We tested both the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Rumian. Toyota Rumion vs. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Feature

In terms of features, both the Rumion and Ertiga are equipped with telematics suites like Toyota i-Connect and Suzuki Connect and offer over 55 options. The top variants of Rumion and Ertiga are loaded with highlights like Arkami’s surround framework, 7-inch infotainment framework with remote Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a 6-speaker music framework including two tweeters and four airbags. Brake assist and ABS with EBD are standard on both MPVs, ESP, hill hold assist, cruise control multiple USB ports and AUX connectivity.

Different alloy wheel design

While both the MPVs will get 15-inch combination wheels, the Rumion will offer an alternative scheme. Since Toyota trades the model in South African trading regions till now, it will probably continue with the same rocker type design for the Indian specification as well. Another obvious difference between the Rumion and Ertiga is in the scheme of alloy wheels. It is also worth noting that the compound wheels on the Rumion look sportier than the composite wheels on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV. The Toyota Rumion measures 1,690 mm in height, 4,395 mm in length and 1,735 mm in width and has a ground clearance of 180 mm. The trunk capacity of the vehicle is 550 litres.

New front grille

The immediate distinguishing component between the two models will be the new grille on the Rumion. It will get a cross section design in the front belt surrounded by a chrome frame. With the Ertiga, Maruti has favored a glitzy approach with a wrap of chrome at the center point of the grille. Both these MPVs will have the same arrangement of projector headlamps. The front grille of the Rumion and Ertiga is the first thing you will notice. The front grille of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga gets horizontal chrome slats, while the Toyota Rumian gets a mesh pattern. Both these front grilles are surrounded by chrome trim.

Reprofiled bumpers

The front and back guards of the Rumion will be revised and Toyota is likely to add silver or brushed aluminum to the lower part of the front guard. A more critical point of view also points out that the guards used in the Rumion and the Ertiga are a bit unique as the latter uses brushed aluminum around the lower air intake. Also, the fog lamp housing looks very different on both the models. Schematically, the Rumian appears to be indistinguishable from the Arteaga, with similar lines and positioning. The new Toyota MPV features a three-support front grille which is either finished in dark or chrome depending on the trim. The slanted A-support points extend to its roof giving it an open vehicle look.

Interior theme

Rumiyan’s interiors are likely to have a dark theme. While the Ertiga gets double tone beige and dark beige, Toyota’s rendering should be possible in more ambiguous dark and light colours. The Rumion will have similar features as the Ertiga, including the same layout, steering wheel and infotainment system. There were rumors that the Rumion would have a darker interior, but Toyota has retained the beige interior of the Ertiga with dashboard panels made of teak wood. The second row of both MPVs gets roof-mounted AC vents with three-speed controls for better cooling.

Being a seven-seater, it also offers an adaptable seating option as the front column gets 60:40 split seats while the third row gets 50:50 split seats with a lean back cover. The front row also has a lean back and slide option. The interiors of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Rumion are very unique. Unlike the beige and black exterior of the Ertiga, the interiors of the new Rumion are grey. As such, we expect the Rumion’s interiors to be easy to maintain.

Exteriors

The fact that there has been virtually no headway between the two MPVs, Toyota has attempted to streamline the exterior to differentiate the Rumion from the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The Rumion comes with an all-dark honeycomb grille while the Ertiga gets an all-chrome finished nose. The front guards on both the vehicles continue as before, though the Toyota’s air dam has been finished in chrome. Both the MPVs have distinct side profiles with a double tone 15-inch composite grille on the back plan along with a chrome strip on the boot discharge. The Rumian MPV gets guiding wheel mounted controls, ventilated coupleholder, switch stopping camera and Toyota interface driven infotainment show on the top two models, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities on select models.

Engine

The Rumian and the Ertiga are available in both petroleum and CNG options. The petrol is handled by a 1.5-litre common suction motor with 102bhp and 137Nm of power. It is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed programmed force converter transmission. The CNG produces 121.5Nm of torque and 87 bhp via a manual transmission. As indicated by both Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, the program’s efficiency is 21.11 km/l, 20.51 km/l for the manual and 26.11 km/kg for the CNG.

New colour

Dignity Brown, Magma Grey, Oxford Blue, Auburn Red, Splendid Silver, Arctic White and Midnight Black are the seven colors that are currently available for the Ertiga. We anticipate that the entire variety range should be made available with Rumian as well. In any case, as seen with the worldwide exclusive, the Rumion could get an optional Dark variant that the automaker calls Universally Sealed Dim. While Maruti Suzuki offers 7 shades (Poise Brown, Magma Dark, Oxford Blue, Coppery Red, Unbelievable Silver, Cold White and 12 PM Dark) with the Ertiga, Toyota offers only 5 shades (Spicy Blue, Provincial Brown, Famous Dim, Bistro) offers. Provides. white, and captivating silver).

Rumion engine details

The Rumion will borrow the 1.5-litre petroleum motor from the Ertiga. The engine produces 102bhp and 136.8Nm and is mated to a five-speed manual and six-speed power converter programmed transmission. The Rumion may also get a CNG version. With the departure of Toyota Rumian, we expect Toyota’s marketing projections to reach the next level. Despite this, it will be difficult for the Rumion to beat the Ertiga in terms of marketing projections.
