Our initial observations were confirmed when the test vehicle equipped with all-wheel drive achieved a 60-mph time of 9.2 seconds at the test track, which can hardly be considered fast. Buyers of the Corolla Cross can choose between a traditional gasoline powertrain or a hybrid one. However, this review specifically focuses on the gasoline version. The gasoline variant is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 169 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). While front-wheel drive comes as standard, all-wheel drive can be selected as an additional option. During our initial test drive, we quickly observed that acceleration was lackluster and the engine sounded noisy, especially at higher RPMs.
Fuel Economy & Real-World MPG
The 2024 Corolla Cross showcases EPA fuel economy ratings of 31 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. If you choose the all-wheel drive model, these numbers will slightly decrease to 29 and 32 respectively. During our own test, the Corolla Cross all-wheel drive achieved a fuel economy of 30 mpg while driving at a speed of 75 mph on the highway. This was a deviation of 2 mpg from its initial EPA estimate.
Interior, Comfort & Cargo
If you are a fan of the Corolla, you will definitely appreciate the Corolla Cross. The interior of the four-door Corolla is almost identical to that of the Corolla Cross, with similar materials, layout, and technology and convenience features. While the Corolla Cross offers slightly more space in the rear seats compared to the Corolla Hatchback, it is about the same as the sedan. Additionally, it provides over 12 cubic feet of extra cargo room. The lower trim levels are more basic, but the XLE model comes with attractive faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a flip-down center armrest for passengers in the rear seats.
