Introduction

Introducing the highly popular Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, a motorcycle that has gained immense popularity in India. In our country, riders have a strong preference for both sporty and vintage motorcycles, and the Conti GT encompasses these characteristics in an impressive manner. Despite not experiencing a surge in sales, primarily due to its sporty ergonomics, the Conti has managed to cultivate a small yet devoted fan base. However, as time passed since its inception in 2018, the lack of updates resulted in it appearing and feeling outdated. To inject new life into the Continental GT 650, Royal Enfield has introduced a few visual and functional updates for 2024 while keeping the fundamental aspects intact.

Styling and Quality

The Continental GT 650 excels in its design. It pays homage to the classic café-racers from the 1960s with its clip-on handlebar, boxy fuel tank featuring deep knee recesses, upswept twin exhausts, and scooped-out seat. The longer saddle can be easily swapped out for a single-piece seat and rear cowl, elevating its visual appeal. While the bike has always been visually appealing, RE has introduced two new paint schemes for 2024 along with alloy wheels and a blacked-out engine casing treatment, giving it a more modern look. Thankfully, even the older versions with chrome accents and spoke wheels are still available for purchase.

Ergonomics and Comfort

The GT 650 offers sporty looks, but there is a trade-off when it comes to ergonomics. Although the 804mm seat height makes it easy to get on the bike, some people may not find the riding position comfortable. Similar to café-racers, you sit in a crouched position, gripping the clip-ons, and your legs are bent sharply to reach the rear-set footpegs. The seat is long enough for you to slide back and grip the tank recesses with your knees. However, if you sit at the front of the seat, your knees will touch the engine case, which can become uncomfortable in traffic due to heat from the engine being felt on your thighs. Fortunately, RE has included small braces on the cylinder head to prevent direct contact between your knees and the engine.

Performance and Handling

The previous model and the Continental GT 650 share the same engine, chassis, suspension, and brakes, resulting in a similar riding experience. However, the addition of alloy wheels has allowed for the use of tubeless radial tires from Vredestein. This not only makes puncture repair easier but also provides better grip and feedback while cornering, instilling more confidence in the rider. Despite weighing 211kg (kerb), the GT 650 handles exceptionally well. It is noticeably more nimble compared to the Interceptor 650. Although some effort is required to initiate a turn, once leaned over, it effortlessly follows the desired line around corners.

If your inputs are not smooth and gradual, the bike may start to feel slightly unstable and shaky when taking bends. The 648cc, air/oil-cooled, parallel-twin engine has always been highly regarded for its refinement, power, and torque. It delivers enough acceleration to reach 100kmph quickly and, under suitable road and traffic conditions, it can even surpass 150kmph. However, what really stands out about this engine is its impressive mid-range torque and ease of use. It transitions seamlessly from doing 50-60kmph in fifth gear to accelerating without any hesitation. The throttle response is also immediate and precise. Furthermore, the GT model manages to minimize vibrations effectively at any speed.

Features and Technology

With the latest version, the GT 650 from Royal Enfield has been infused with a suitable amount of modern features. This includes the presence of alloy wheels which ensures that punctures are no longer a nightmare. The adjustable levers also provide the convenience of customizing their reach according to your comfort. Additionally, the inclusion of a USB charger allows you to charge your devices while on the move. Although the rotary switches and LED headlamp don’t necessarily enhance everyday convenience, they do add an aesthetic appeal. On the other hand, the instrument cluster could benefit from providing more information. While the analogue dials and small LCD screen complement the retro theme, it would have been beneficial to have additional data such as a gear position indicator.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel efficiency of the Continental GT 650 is approximately 22-25kmpl, which is quite good given its engine size and performance. It has a fuel tank capacity of 13.7 litres, which means you can ride for around 340km before needing to refuel. Choosing to buy the Continental GT 650 is more of an emotional decision rather than a practical one. Café racers like the GT 650 have certain drawbacks such as a sporty riding position, limited space for a passenger, and in most cases, a firm suspension. These limitations also apply to the GT 650. However, if you are drawn to the concept of café racers and the unique experience they provide, there’s no doubt that the Continental GT 650 is the perfect choice for you.
